  • Train collision
Mewar Express suddenly halted because of alleged chain-pulling before it was hit by the Goa Express.

With conflicting reports on the cause of the train accident near Mathura, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided to go for a CBI enquiry into the mishap.

"Realising the gravity of the accident, I have decided that it is better to go for a CBI probe," Banerjee told reporters last night during a visit to the site of the accident involving Goa Samparkranti Express and Mewar Express.

Twenty-two people were killed and as many injured in the accident on Wednesday.

She said, "Many questions have cropped up. Somebody is saying that chain-pulling was the reason for the accident and others say there was a problem in the signal. It may be a case of criminal offence also. So, I have decided that we must hand over the case to CBI."

The Railway Minister said if any criminal offence has been committed by anyone, there has to be stringent action against them and "hence we will hand over the case to the CBI".

"We are for examining all issues. It was a very bad incident. We want to ensure punishment to all the guilty," Banerjee said.

Police has registered a case against unnamed persons after it emerged that the Mewar Express had come to a sudden halt because of alleged chain-pulling before it was hit from behind by the Goa Express.

Banerjee said the Railway Ministry would bear all the expenses for the treatment of the injured.

She thanked the Army, local police and the villagers for extending help to the accident victims.

Mr.By: jai Singh | 24-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Mamta Bannerrjee is not better than her predecessor. She too is very busy stuffing the Railways with her supporters just like Lau Prasad, Abdul Ghani and what have you. They treat the railways as their personal job bank. Everything else is very secondary.
USELESS COMMENTSBy: Milon , Kolkata, West Bengal | 22-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward from the comments of Jai it is clear he is a Pro-CPM. Don't expect Mamata Banerjee to drive railway engines. If people like Jai tries to do chain pulling (politics) then accidents are inevitable.Don't try to bring China Model to India. Communism has collapsed.
train incidentBy: yohan | 22-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward owning moral responsibility for this incident as well as many thefts, drugging, etc. on train, which she is not able to control despite having RPF and police and advanced technologies, she should resign forthwith. she is more interested in confining to bengal, rather than the nation as a whole, and which she is never going to achieve. even in a municipal corpn like siliguri, her party could not succeed in getting the chairman post. as a railway minister having cabinet rank, she should attend cabinet meetings, rather than playing parochial politics back in bengal. the more she shows greed, the more frustration for her in bengal. so better to grow in national stature and focus on national issues. she should immediately form a team of RPF and police to man the trains to prevent thefts, drugging, etc. TTEs also should be more serious in checking the tickets and the typical behavior of some 'goonda' passengers.
ShameBy: Jai | 22-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Mamta bannerjee should be sacked. She is too busy playing politics and has no time to improve the Railways. Look at the Chinese Railways and see the contrast in the Indian railways. What a shame.
She deserves more time ...By: Manoj | 22-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Railway Ministry must go to someone who thinks Pan India. A person like Jairam Ramesh or Mani Shankar Aiyar would be better suited. Having said that, Mamata deserves more time.
