Terming the situation in Bengal as ‘frightening’ in the wake of non-ending political violence in the state, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has called for intervention of Central agencies to bring the situation under control.
Late on Monday night, Banerjee spoke to Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee over phone and apprised him of the current situation. She also sent Trinamool MP and Union Minister of state for Shipping Mukul Roy to Delhi to brief Mukherjee about the Lalgarh situation and post-poll violence in the state.
“I want the Central agencies to visit West Bengal and seize the huge stockpile of arms and ammunition that are with the CPM cadres and miscreants. There should be a combing operation to seize the arms and ammunition,” Banerjee told mediapersons at her Kalighat residence on Tuesday.
“If the arms are not seized then the internal security of not only Bengal but of the nation will be at stake,” she said. On Monday, Banerjee had met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on the same issue. She also said that attacks were mostly targeted against minorities and Dalits. “From Asansol to Rajarhat, arms and ammunition are reaching the CPM cadres and miscreants. Minorities and the Dalits are especially at the receiving end. The state government has failed to safeguard democracy and the law and order in the state,” she added. Even though she has not openly demanded imposition of Article 356 in Bengal, she has given enough indication that her party would not hesitate in making such demand.
