  • The police have booked one Gurjant Singh for allegedly killing his 25-year-old wife, Malkeet Kaur, for dowry. Malkeet was burnt alive at her house at Fatehpur Jattan village near Dera Bassi on Monday. Her brother, Gurnam Singh, reported to the police that his sister was married to Gurjant Singh for the last five years, and was being harassed and pressurised to bring Rs 50,000 in cash as dowry for around a year. Gurnam claimed that he had paid Gurjant Rs 35,000 cash, but that failed to satisfy his greed. On Monday, Gurnam said that his another sister, Kiran Kaur, who was married to Gurjant’s brother, Binder Singh, told him over telephone that Gurjant allegedly first thrashed Malkeet before dousing kerosene oil on her and setting her ablaze. Malkeet had died before Gurnam could reach her in-laws’ place. Her dead body was sent to the Civil Hospital. The police have lodged a case under Section 304-B of the Indian Penal Code against Gurjant.
