Man Booker International Prize travels to India in 2013

Jaipur will play an important role in the Man Booker International Prize 2013 as the judges will announce the list of finalists for the award at the venue of a prestigious literature festival held in the city.

The DSC Jaipur Literature Festival, the largest and liveliest literary festival in Asia-Pacific, will host the press conference to announce the judges' list of finalists on January 24, next year.

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on May 22.

According a press release, the five judges for the Man Booker International Prize 2013 --the scholar and literary critic Sir Christopher Ricks (Chair), author and essayist Elif Batuman, writer and broadcaster Aminatta Forna, novelist Yiyun Li and author and academic Tim Parks, will be in Jaipur to announce their list of the writers who are under serious consideration for the prize.

On the same day the DSC Jaipur Literature Festival will also host a public panel discussion with the judges, which will be followed by a reception for invited guests at the City Palace in Jaipur.

The Man Booker International Prize recognises a writer for his or her achievement in fiction.

Winner gets 60,000 pounds, the prize is awarded every two years to a living author who has published fiction either originally in English or whose work is generally available in translation in the English language.

The winner is chosen solely at the discretion of the judging panel; there are no submissions from publishers.

Previous winners have been Philip Roth (2011), Alice Munro (2009), Chinua Achebe (2007) and Ismail Kadare (2005).

In addition, there is a separate award for translation and, if applicable, the winner can choose a translator of his or her work into English to receive a prize of 15,000 pounds.
