'Man changed his name from Ram to Ramesh on nursing home register'

In a curious twist to Jyoti murder case, the authorities of Jindal IVF and Sant Memorial Nursing, where Jyoti had gone to get her pregnancy terminated, on Wednesday revealed that the person accompanying Jyoti had signed his name in the nursing home's register as Ram and had later changed it to Ramesh.

The Panchkula Police have claimed that Chaudhary had posed as Jyoti's husband at the nursing home and had made her terminate the pregnancy.

Dr Umesh Jindal told Chandigarh Newsline: "The man put his signatures as Ram but later after the duo had left, I checked the register and I found that he had overwritten on his signature and had changed it to Ramesh. Possibly, when I took Jyoti inside for ultrasound, that is when he made the change. At that time, it did not occur to me that there could be any foul play."

According to the nursing home records, when Jyoti came to the nursing home on her maiden visit in August, she sought termination of her pregnancy. Consequently, as per the requirement of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 1971, before termination of pregnancy, signatures of a witness is mandatory. Therefore, the doctor asked the accompanying "friend" to sign his name.

Reiterating that she had no idea if the man accompanying Jyoti was Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary or not, Dr Jindal, on the basis of the records, said, "The name was overwritten."

On Tuesday, Dr Umesh had categorically stated that Jyoti did not undergo abortion at the clinic as was claimed by the Panchkula Police, and instead she was prescribed an abortion pill after she was found to be five weeks pregnant. The doctor had also clarified that Jyoti had confessed that she was unmarried and that was the reason why she did not want to continue with her pregnancy.
