Man dies mysteriously, family alleges murder by in-laws

Lakhwinder Singh (26), a resident of Kharajpur village in Rajpura, died under mysterious circumstances at Behra village near Dera Bassi on Wednesday. Earlier, police had booked four persons under section 306 of IPC, but the deceased's family claimed that Lakhwinder had been murdered by his in-laws. The deceased's family and relatives refused to take back the dead body and blocked the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway for about one hour, after which police booked Lakhwinder's wife, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law and another person involved on charges of murder.

According to Dera Bassi SHO Gurdyal Singh, Surjit Singh, the deceased's brother, told the police that his brother had got married to Simran Kaur, daughter of Joginder Singh, resident of Behra village, Dera Bassi, five years ago. About a month ago, the couple had a fight after which Simran went to her parents' house and lodged a police complaint against her husband with Rajpura police with the help of another person. As a result of this, the Rajpura police forced Lakhwinder to go to Behra village to bring his wife back for which Lakhwinder reached Behra village on Tuesday evening from where he did not return. Surjit claimed that Simran's father called them and said that they have murdered Lakhwinder. On the other hand, Simran's family said that Lakhwinder suddenly fell sick when he reached their house for which they had also informed the village sarpanch after which he was rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him found dead.

After the postmortem of the body on Wednesday evening at Dera Bassi Civil Hospital, Lakhwinder's family members refused to take the body home and protested against the police by blocking the National Highway for about an hour. It was only after the police booked Lakhwinder's wife Simran, mother-in-law, father-in-law Joginder Singh, brother-in-law Mehal Singh and a person Joginder Singh Tiger under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code that the family took the body home. Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles remained caught under the heavy traffic jam on the highway and commuters suffered a lot of inconvenience.
