The Panchkula police on Friday arrested a resident of Hamirpur for allegedly duping a Panchkula doctor of Rs 44.5 lakh on the promise of getting him a postgraduate seat in the Himalyan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT), Dehradun. It was on June 27 when Joginder Singh and his wife Sonu were booked on charges of duping Dr Arvind Kumar, a former doctor with Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh. Joginder had reportedly come to Panchkula to strike a compromise with Dr Kumar, following which the police arrested him. “The doctor claimed the couple had visited GMCH for the treatment of tumour, and it was during that period that they convinced him. He handed over the money to them in January this year, in return of which he was given a provisional admission certificate,” said a police officer, adding that on visiting the university, the doctor found the certificate was fake. After being produced in court, the accused was sent to police remand for 10 days.“Preliminary investigations have shown that the accused had kept Rs 20 lakh with one his friends in Bangalore,” added the police officer.
