A magistrate court recently sentenced a labourer to three-year rigorous imprisonment for an attempted robbery at the Bank of Maharashtra in Mulshi. Judicial Magistrate First Class Y P Marulkar convicted Ravindra Gopal Hansda (35), who is a resident of Jharkhand, in the case.

Around 5.45 in the evening on July 18 last year, Hansda along with an absconding accused, Deepak Tudu, entered the Bank of Maharashtra, Kasaramboli branch in Mulshi taluka. Cashier Dattatraya Jori was counting cash, and manager Hemlata Joshi was working in her cabin.

According to the prosecution, Hansda went towards cashier's cabin, while Tudu stood at the main door. The two were told the bank was closed. Hansda pointed a pistol at the cashier, while the manager rang the alarm. On hearing the siren, the duo ran out of the bank, but were chased by some people standing at the bus stop. They managed to catch Hansda, while Tudu escaped. Police recovered a pistol and a live cartridge from Hansda. A chargesheet was filed against Hansda under section 393 of the Indian penal Code (attempt to commit robbery) and under the Arms Act.

Assistant public prosecutor R Y Suryavanshi examined seven witnesses. Chemical analysis of the pistol and CCTV footage of the bank were put on record before the court. After hearing both sides, the court sentenced Hansda to three years RI and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on him for the robbery attempt and two year RI and Rs 1,000 fine for possessing a pistol. The punishments will run concurrently. ENS
