Man gets life term for wife’s murder

A 27-year-old man was awarded life imprisonment on Wednesday for torturing and murdering his wife Chandradevi,(20),in 2007.

A 27-year-old man was awarded life imprisonment on Wednesday for torturing and murdering his wife Chandradevi,(20),in 2007. Chandradev alias Chandu Parmeshwar Rai had strangulated his wife because she refused to get Rs 40,000 from her parents and buy him a motorcycle. Additional sessions judge VV Joshi awarded him life imprisonment and Rs 20,000 fine for murdering his wife and three years imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fine for torturing her for money.

The incident had taken place at Rai’s residence in Uttam Nagar on October 29,2007. “After killing his wife,Rai misguided the police and had said that she had died of illness. The police,however,found strangulation marks on her neck. Police had recovered a dupatta and handkerchief with blood stains from the house,” Fargade said.

Additional public prosecutor Vijay Fargade examined eight witnesses in the case. Chandradevi’s post mortem report,forensic report,Chandradevi’s brother’s statement and other evidences proved vital in the case.

Chandradevi’s brother gave the testimony that Rai used to ask money from her to buy a motorbike. According to her brother,Rai had asked her to stay at her parents place till she brought money,after which Chandradevi stayed with her parents for three years. She had also filed a maintenance case against him in the court,which the court had accepted. However,Rai compromised and took her home. He killed her within 15 days of bringing her back.

Fargade had argued that only Rai and his wife were present at home at the time of the incident.
