  • The Shivajinagar police have arrested the husband of a woman who committed suicide last Sunday allegedly because of harassment by her husband’s family.

Sanjana Sakpal’s husband Sandeep was arrested on Friday for abetting her suicide. He has been remanded to police custody till May 21. The police is now investigating the role of Sandeep’s parents and relatives.

The victim died on May 10 after consuming poison. She was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital but was declared dead before arrival. Following this her husband and his family filed a case of suicide at the Shivajinagar police. Sapkpal’s family, however, filed a case of cruelty and abetment to suicide against her husband and his family. They also claimed that she may have been forced to consume poison.

According to the post mortem report, Sakpal died because of consuming poison. Hospital sources said there were external injuries on her body like marks from a shoe hit but she appeared to have consumed the poison on her own accord.

“We have arrested Sandeep Sakpal but I cannot say with surety that his wife committed suicide due to abuse by him,” said assistant police inspector K T Parab of the Shivajinagar police. “As for his family, we are investigating their role but they were in Raigad from much before the day of the suicide,” he added.
