A day after MMTC general manager Suraj Modi sent an email to the Delhi Police chief complaining about shoddy investigations into the murder of his 20-year-old son Shobhit, police claimed to have made a breakthrough in the case with the detention of a man they said was the main suspect.
Police sources claimed that Shobhit was killed as a result of a failed robbery attempt by a drug addict.
A second-year IT student at Manav Rachna University in Faridabad,Shobhit was found stabbed metres away from his house in C-6 Vasant Kunj on the night of May 5. He was returning home from the DLF Promenade Mall.
The suspect (name withheld on police request) was detained on Friday evening in South Delhi. Searches were on to detain another person who police said was an associate of the suspect.
Police sources said their probe revealed that the suspect wanted to rob Shobhit but he resisted and even slapped him. This infuriated the suspect who, along with his associate, stabbed him,the sources claimed. The suspect is a resident of Meerut and has several cases against him,the sources said.
Shobhits father Suraj Modi,in a long email to police chief B K Gupta on Thursday, referred to the slack approach of the police in the probe.
I had sent him (the police chief) an email on Thursday asking him where the investigations were headed. I said his his force was not being cooperative at all and had failed to reach any conclusion even 20 days after the crime, Modi told The Indian Express.
Police had earlier questioned friends of Shobhit after his family said that the father of a girl he knew wanted an end to his friendship with her.
