Two kilograms of iridium powder,used as an adulterant in gold,was recovered from a man arrested from Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday,police said. Faiz Ahmed Abdul Jabbar Ghawte landed at Terminal 3 of the Airport from Hong Kong and was booked by the Customs for smuggling the Iridium powder,which was concealed in specially designed pockets in his vest and trousers,officials said in a statement on Sunday. Officials said market value of the seized iridium powder was Rs 40 lakh. Ghawte was also carrying fabric worth Rs 59,000 and a luxury mobile phone,police said.
35 cases of dengue reported on Sunday
Thirty-five cases of dengue were reported on Sunday,taking the total number of patients tested positive for the virus to 652. The South Municipal Corporation reported the highest cases at 246 and the North corporation recording 223 confirmed dengue cases. Areas under the East corporation have reported 155 cases. Thirteen patients from the NDMC areas have also been been diagnosed with dengue.
Two-year-old boy run over in Ber Sarai
A two-year-old boy was crushed to death by a car in Ber Sarai,South Delhi,on Sunday morning. Jagiya was run over by a Mahindra Scorpio when he was standing with his father Pappan near a residential complex in Ber Sarai,police said. The driver of the Scorpio,Kamal Singh,was trying to reverse the car. Jagiya suffered head injuries and died in Fortis Hospital. Singh,an acquaintance of Pappan,has been arrested.
Ten injured as van crashes into road divider
Ten persons were injured when the driver of the Maruti van they were travelling in crashed the vehicle into the divider of a flyover in Kashmere Gate,North Delhi,on Saturday night. Police said Furqan was driving the van at a high speed and lost control of the vehicle. The passengers were going to Shahdara from Kashmere Gate bus terminus, a senior police officer said. Six of the injured were discharged from the hospital after treatment,while four,including the driver,are still admitted at AIIMS Trauma Center.
Meteor shower peaks over weekend
The annual Orionid meteor shower,which occurs every year in mid-to-late October,peaked over the weekend. The Orionid shower peaked this weekend as a number of meteors streaked the sky in the dark hours just before dawn,
C B Devgun,president of the NGO SPACE,said. SPACE organised an event at India Gate to view the meteor shower that lasts for at least a week and produces up to 20 green and yellow meteors per hour during its peak. ens & PTI
