The 26-year-old son of a Delhi advocate,Varun Mehta, reportedly committed suicide on Monday after allegedly stabbing his old friend Deepshikha Arora to death inside his car the evening before.

Deepshikha’s body had been found in Varun’s car,a WagonR,around 8 pm on Sunday evening. The car was parked in a clearing near the Cross River Mall in East Delhi. From a note found near Deepshikha’s body, the police have surmised it might be a case of unrequited love. The note read: “You are not faithful to me. You don’t love me. You love somebody else.”

On Monday, the Mathura police contacted Delhi officials and said the body of a young man had been found on the train tracks there. They believed it to be Varun Mehta’s. They were put on the trail by a receipt found on the body which had the number of a phone repair shop in Delhi.

The Mathura police said Varun had thrown himself on the tracks. His father Deep Mehta has accompanied Delhi officers to Mathura for identification.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) K C Dwivedi said: “Varun’s phone was switched off since Sunday night. We came to know today that he had died.” Officers said Varun might have fled Delhi last night in panic.

On Sunday evening,Anand Vihar’s head constable Suresh Kumar was the first to notice the abandoned car in Karkardooma. He prised open the car doors and found a heavily bleeding Deepshikha on the front passenger seat.

An officer said: “Deepshikha’s phone rang that moment and it was her father Gulshan Arora. We called him to the spot.” Besides the note, the police also found two large knives in the car. There were nine deep cuts on Deepshikha’s body; the one on the throat was fatal.

She was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. A case under Section 302 (murder) was registered at the Anand Vihar police station before the hunt began for the killer.

Sources said Varun was besotted with Deepshikha but was dejected since she considered him only a friend. An officer said: “He wanted to marry her but she did not love him,her family has said. She treated him as a good friend. He doubted she was seeing another. On Sunday,he asked her to meet him. His father has said Varun left home around 1.30 pm on Sunday.”
