Man rapes toddler, gets 32 yrs in jail

Police tracked him through mobile phone he had stolen from house of girl's parents.

A 21-year-old man was sentenced to a minimum of 32 years in jail by a Delhi court for kidnapping and raping a one-year-old girl. Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau convicted 21-year-old Uday Kumar Yadav. Lau said Yadav was a predatory paedophile and a menace to the society as he had not spared even a one-year-old child.

The court sentenced Yadav to seven years in jail for kidnapping the toddler and life imprisonment for raping her. It also imposed a five-year jail term for stealing a mobile phone from the house. The court has ordered that the convict should not be given any remission in his sentence until he spends at least 20 years of the life term in jail.

The court also praised the investigating officers who had cracked the case on the basis of electronic surveillance and forensic evidence.

It said, "It would have been difficult to nab the culprit had it not been for the excellent work done by the initial investigating officers who had cracked this case on the basis of electronic surveillance and analysis of data while the forensics (DNA finger printing) came to the aid of the investigating agencies as a handy tool later."

The prosecution had said Yadav had entered the jhuggi, in which the child lived with her parents, on the night on September 24 last year to commit theft.

While stepping out of the house with the phone, he also picked up the toddler, who was sleeping with her parents, took her to a nearby park and raped her.

Police tracked Yadav by putting the stolen mobile phone under surveillance. Yadav had also made a call to the PCR from the stolen mobile phone but the device ran out of battery in the middle of the conversation.
