Miracle Baby Fall cushioned by thick grass, baby unscathed; father held.
A seven-month-old baby flung 40 feet down the Indira Gandhi railway overbridge in Pimpri by his inebriated father after a quarrel with his wife on Wednesday afternoon miraculously survived the fall. The baby fell on a patch of thick grass between two railway tracks, cushioning his fall.
People who witnessed the quarrel and saw the man, Yuvraj Anil Deshmukh, throw the baby off the bridge thrashed him and the police had a hard time rescuing him from their grip to arrest him.
YCMH medical superintendent Dr Anand Jagdale, also the PCMC health chief, said the baby did not suffer any injuries. "Yes, surprisingly the baby has not suffered any injuries despite being thrown from such a height. The police told us the baby fell on the green patch between the two tracks," he said.
Dr Jagdale said a CT scan, sonography and X-ray on the baby did not find any injuries. He said the baby has been kept under observation and would be discharged in a day or two.
Police arrested his father Deshmukh, who lives in Ambedkar Colony, River Road, Pimpri.
Police said Deshmukh had liquor and had a quarrel with his wife on the overbridge. He screamed at his wife and the commotion attracted passsers-by.
Deshmukh who had the baby, Shubham, in his handed allegedly told his wife in anger that he would throw the baby down the bridge.
People at the spot pleaded with him not to do so. Two traffic constables also reached the spot but before they could nab Deshmukh, he flung Shubham from the bridge.
Police constable S Pandhare ran down and immediately took Shubham, accompanied by his mother to YCMH in an autorickshaw.
