Man who attempted suicide in lock-up dies, probe on

A 32-year-old man, who was arrested last month for allegedly killing his wife, died at Cooper Hospital in Juhu on Monday after he allegedly attempted suicide five days ago inside the Andheri police lock-up. Though cops claim that there was no foul play in the death, the crime branch has been asked to probe the incident.

Suresh Arouthar was arrested by the Amboli police for allegedly killing his wife Meera (30) on September 25. He was remanded in police custody and lodged in the Andheri police lock-up.

Andheri police officers said Arouthar was depressed after the death of his wife. Police said that five days ago, Arouthar tried to hang himself but his cell mate raised an alarm, following which the lock-up guards rushed Arouthar to Cooper Hospital.

A police officer said that Arouthar suspected his wife of having an affair with someone and fought with her daily. In a fit of rage, Arouthar allegedly strangled her. Later, she was rushed to a hospital, where he claimed that she had fallen off a staircase. Doctors, however, found strangulation marks on her neck.

Arouthar worked as a sweeper with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The couple stayed in the Amboli slums and had two children. They are now staying with their relatives.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has been asked to investigate Arouthar's death. "It is a clear case of suicide and there is no foul play involved," said an officer from Andheri police station.
