Man who claimed to be ex-Army Chief’s kin booked for cheating

A man who claimed to be a close relative of former Army Chief Gen. V K Singh has been booked by Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing for cheating and forgery. The man, identified as Shambhu Prasad Singh, allegedly carried a fake identity card, and has allegedly duped many claiming to be an IAS officer at the home ministry. The police have also named Singh's wife and five others in the alleged fraud.

Shambhu Prasad Singh, a controversial contractor whose many business interests include two companies that were blacklisted by the Army and paramilitary forces for financial irregularities in 2011, had also come under the scanner of the armed forces last year for his memberships at two exclusive clubs in Mumbai and New Delhi.

His memberships at Mumbai's elite United Services Club and the Army Golf Club in Delhi were terminated after he was found to have falsely claimed to be an IAS officer in the application form.

The EOW registered a case earlier this month on a complaint by Rajkot businessman Anil Jethani who had bought property in Delhi's Green Park Extension from Singh for Rs 5.17 crore. Singh allegedly tried to intimidate Jethani later, and created a fake lease deed in the name of Kolkata-based National Thinkers Forum.

"In this manner, Singh was trying to create hurdles for Jethani and usurp the property," an EOW official said.

JCP (EOW) Sandeep Goyal told The Sunday Express, "We have registered a case against Singh and others and investigations are on." The investigations are believed to have revealed that Singh had cheated several banks, and that he carried a forged government identity card valid upto April 2014.

The police are learnt to be also probing several visits that Singh made to government offices and the defence ministry. "We will seek the details of his visits and meetings at the defence ministry," a senior police officer said.
