The Government Railway Police (Daund) have arrested a man accused of robbing passengers of long-distance trains after spiking their food and drinks.

Bharat Jain (26) was arrested at Daund on a Chennai-Mumbai Express train. The GRP recovered 3 laptops,18 mobile phones and gold ornaments weighing 1315.350 gram from him. They also recovered property worth Rs 20,00,000.

Jain is a native of Rajasthan and had left his house several years ago. “After leaving home he started indulging in petty crimes and was sent to Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat for bag-lifting. In jail he came across a thief called Kamlesh. It was Kamlesh who allegedly taught him about spiking commuters’ food and drink and robbing them,” said Additional Director General Raj Khilnani.

Khilnani said that Jain had a unique modus operandi in the sense that he would book 2-3 tickets under different names on a train. “During the course of the journey he would befriend the fellow commuters and offer them refreshments spiked with sleep-inducing tablets. Being a smooth talker and a sharp dresser his fellow passengers did not suspect any foul play. After the operation he would take a flight to the next destination,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Rolphie Pereira (GRP).

Jain was arrested on August 25 after the Chennai police got a tip-off about his presence on the train. “The police recovered cash, some mobile phones and 50 tablets with a commuter who identified himself as Bharat Shat. The police immediately contacted a doctor at Daund who checked the tablets and informed the police that they were sleep-inducing tablets. We learnt that he used to buy the tablets from a chemist in Bhayandar. Jain used to stay at plush hotels in the Mira-Bhayandar area. We recovered air tickets, reservation forms,IT PAN card and sleep-inducing pills from his room,” said Pereira.

There are cases against Jain in Pune,Solapur,Miraj,Daund,Kadappa,Kalyan,Palghar,Shivaji Nagar,Vijaywada,Wadi and Belgaum. “Jain is in the custody of Pune Railway Police till October 12,” said Khilnani.
