During the 26/11 attacks, several citizens and policemen rose to the occasion by helping in rescue process and fighting back the terrorists. While many were rewarded with medals by state and central governments for their bravery, the then assistant chief security officer of the Hotel Trident-Oberoi,Rajesh Kadam, who played a key role in the counter terrorist operation is still awaiting official recognition for his contribution.

Kadam guided the NSG hit team, who started their counter terrorist operation called ‘Operation Black Tornado’,to help them locate the hidden terrorists at the Trident-Oberoi. The commandos were not aware of the topography of the hotel and wanted a staff member to guide them through the hotel as they went on sanitizing each floor. Kadam was the right choice as he was employed as the security officer since 2006 and knew every corner and passageways of the hotel.

Accordingly he accompanied the NSG team from November 27 night till the morning of November 29. He climbed down the 21st floor of the hotel moving around with the hit team as it kept checking each and every room for the terrorists.

After the operation was over,Kadam was praised by Lt Col R K Sharma of NSG who was leading the operation in a letter to the then City Collector I A Kundan on December 5,2008. He strongly recommended that “his selfless devotion and dedication in saving human lives by risking his own life at the time of national crisis be acknowledged and appreciated in a deserving and benefiting manner”.

Kundan also wrote to the then Chief Secretary,Dr Johny Joseph, stating “his exceptionally brave action should be acknowledged by giving him a certificate or a bravery award”.

However, the state has still to recommend Kadam’s name for any medal. Speaking to Newsline,Kadam who is now working with a private mobile service provider, said,“I did what I was supposed to then. It was my responsibility.” He added,“If the state or Centre awards me,I would really appreciate it.”
