A man who served seven years in jail after being arrested in a conspiracy to kill slain Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is on the wrong side of law yet again with as many as three cases, from contract killing to attempt to murder to theft case, being registered against him in the past five months.
Batala police arrested Sukhwinder Singh Goldy in a truck theft case along with three others after they allegedly stole a 10-tyre truck, which was later dismantled in parts to sell to a scrap dealer.
Batala SSP Tulsi Ram said Goldy and four others Balraj Singh Pappu, Amritpal Singh, Swaran Singh and Mohinderpal Singh had opened fire in jubilation along with four others in Raigarh district, now in Chhattisgarh state, after learning that Rajiv Gandhi had been assassinated in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
"They had hatched a conspiracy to kill Rajiv Gandhi on his likely tour to Raigarh area. They had planned to gun him down. But, the moment they learnt that Rajiv Gandhi had been assassinated in Sriperumbudur, they opened fire in jubilation and police arrested them. Their interrogation revealed their conspiracy to make an attempt at the life of Rajiv Gandhi and they were sentenced to seven years in prison," SSP said.
Batala police Wednesday arrested a truck driver Jatinder Singh with dismantled parts of trucks who told the police that he and four others namely Goldy, Raj Singh, Malkit Singh and Tarsem Singh had stolen the truck from Amritsar-Tarn Taran road.
SSP said Goldy was already arrested in an attempt to murder case in police station Sekhwan registered on 21 January. SSP added that Goldy also faced a contract killing case in Jalandhar dating back to September 2012.
