Man who threw acid on guard, stole gold in TN held

A robber who fled Tamil Nadu with stolen gold weighing 2.5 kgs after throwing acid on a watchman was caught by Malwani police late on Saturday. He was handed over to Tamil Nadu police on Sunday.

Accused Sujay Choudhary, 24, was tracked through his phone records, police said, He was employed at a gold polishing unit in Coimbatore, from where he allegedly stole the gold.

On receiving a 'distress call' from Tamil Nadu police, Malwani cops began the hunt for Choudhary. He was traced to his relative's house in Kurar village, Malad East.

"On February 17, he was leaving from work when the security guard found something suspicious. He stopped Choudhary and asked for identity documents. Choudhary then threw acid on him and fled," said API Rajesh Tendulkar.

Coimbatore police found that the identity documents given to Choudhary's employers were forged. He had given his address in Kolkata, which was found to be false. Investigations revealed that he hailed from Uttar Pradesh while his phone records showed that he was in Mumbai. His actual location, however, was difficult to track, police said. In the last two days, police got several locations of the accused between Wadala and Churchgate. His location finally showed Kurar village on Saturday night.

"He was packing his bags to flee to UP. He had packed gifts like laptop, expensive clothes and mobile phones bought from the money he made after selling the gold and jewellery," said an officer.
