Two men who lived with couple at Sterling Apartment absconding, prime suspects
The murder of a couple in their apartment at Warje Malwadi in the early hours of Tuesday has triggered a hunt for two young men, both aged around 20, who had been living in the house for the last five years.
One of them is an engineering student and the other cooked food for the couple, police investigations revealed. Both were reportedly related to the couple.
The police found the body of Kamlakar Shankarrao Ranjeri (50) and his wife Simla (50) in the two-bedroom ground-floor flat of Sterling Apartment. They suspect that the two, Sunny Lama (20) and Dil Bahadur Tamang (20), fled with money the couple had got earlier this month from the sale of the flat.
Police said a neighbour, Omkar Vinayak Gadre, heard the noise of a car being driven in reverse gear and saw three people fleeing in Kamlakar's car.
On seeing the door of the couple's flat ajar, he informed the chairman of Sterling Apartment, Ajit Manohar Salunkhe.
Fearing thieves may have struck, they informed the police control room.
Within 10 minutes, a Warje police team reached the place and entered the apartment to find Kamlakar's body in a pool of blood in the hall. Simla was found dead in the bedroom. Sharp weapons had been used on the neck and other body parts of the couple.
Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Shinde, rushed to the spot. Neighbours told the police that Lama and Tamang had been residing with the couple for the last five years. Kamlakar, who was from Karnakata, and Simla, a Nepal native, had been residents of Sterling Apartment since 2005. They had told neighbours that Lama and Tamang were relatives, police said.
