In one of his first important decisions after taking over as Union Law Minister,Salman Khursheed got Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to accept Solicitor General (SG) Gopal Subramaniums resignation on Thursday.
Though the decision had been taken by his predecessor M Veerappa Moily,it was left to Khursheed to get the formal orders issued. Acting on the advice of the new Law Minister, sources said, the Prime Minister cleared the file.
Subramanium had tendered his resignation on Saturday to protest against the unfair decision of the government to appoint a special counsel in the 2G spectrum case without taking him into confidence. He had asserted that he had resigned to protect the dignity of the office of SG.
Sources in the ministry said the government had already initiated the process of finalising the next SG. Among others, the name of Rohington Nariman, the senior Supreme Court lawyer whose appointment as special counsel to represent the government in the 2G case had miffed Subramanium so much that he decided to put in his papers,is under consideration for the post.
