Manmohan,wife cast vote from Guwahati

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur cast their votes at a polling station under Gauhati Lok Sabha constituency.

Singh and his wife,after arriving at Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport around 11 am,flew in a chopper to a temporary helipad at Khanapara.

They then drove straight to the polling booth number 156 at Dispur Government High School to exercise their franchise at around 11:40 am amidst tight security.

While Singh,who is elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam,had the voter serial number of 726,Kaur’s name was placed next,at 727.

Singh and his wife then headed back to the helipad for the airport to board their special flight back to Delhi. The Prime Minister did not cast his vote in the 2004 Lok Sabha and 2006 state assembly elections.

Immediately after they arrived at the polling station sanitised by security forces,the Prime Minister and his wife stood like ordinary citizens in a queue along with other voters behind them.

After standing briefly in line,the Prime Minister and his wife entered the booth and pressed the button of the EVM as the 258th and 259th persons to vote in the polling station of 1138 voters.

Coming out,Singh briefly spoke to waiting reporters expressing confidence that his party would win.

The common voters were not affected by VVIPs voting in the area even though security checks were carried out by the SPG personnel,besides the normal frisking of voters as was the case in other polling booths,official sources said.

To minimise inconvenience to voters,the movement of traffic was regulated and parking on roads restricted for a brief period only till the arrival and departure of the Prime Minister from the polling station.

The vehicular movement on the opposite side of the Prime Minister’s convoy was allowed to move,the sources added.

The address of the Prime Minister and his wife in the voters’ list is House No:3989,Nandan Nagar,Ward No:51,Sarumotoria,Dispur,District-Kamrup,Assam,Pin-781006. The house is owned by Hemoprava Saikia,former Assam minister and wife of former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia.
