The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved the appointment of Raja Aederi as the architect for the repair and renovation of the top four floors of Mantralaya that were damaged in the June 21 fire. The total cost of renovation has been estimated at Rs 81.64 crore.
A high power committee headed by the chief secretary has also been appointed to oversee the renovation. The government has agreed to pay Aederi as per the charges of Council of Architects.
A massive fire originating from the fourth floor of the Mantralaya had engulfed the building within minutes and gutted top four floors of the state secretariat, including the offices of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Last month, speaking about the remaking of the damaged floors of Mantralaya,Chavan had said that as per recommendations of experts from National Disaster Management Authority and PWD,the seventh floor will not be reconstructed because it had a steel beam that has become weak. Plans were being drawn for restructuring floors four, five and six and exploring options of including the area of central courtyard to create one lakh sq ft of extra space within the building.
He had also said the repairs to the state secretariat building over the next few months would include modern systems like gypsum board partitions instead of plywood, sprinkler systems, new fire alarms.
In the supplementary demands presented to the state legislature last month, the PWD had sought Rs 50 crore for repairs to the building alongside an additional Rs 30 crore for expenses related to relocating offices from the gutted top three floors.
