Many takers for DU’s food technology course

“Despite availability in just two colleges,this course is highly sought after since students get placed well,it being a job-oriented course. Moreover,we provide industrial training during the course itself,which gives them a hands-on experience,” said Dr Deepa Joshi,department in-charge at Rajguru College.

“It attracts a large number of students due to its novelty as an educational course and also because of a growing demand for food technologists in today’s world of packaged and fast foods,” said Dr Jai Prakash,principal of Bhaskaracharya College.

Job placements are available in areas related to packaging,processing,quality control,research,hospitals and other catering services. For specialisation in the field,students also have the opportunity of higher studies.

Institutes such as CFTRI in Mysore,Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar,ANGRAU in Andhra Pradesh and NDRI in Haryana etc,offer higher studies in this course.

The three-year honours course is spread over an average of nine papers in every annual session,which includes practicals and industrial training. Based on the implementation of the semester system,however,the course structure is subject to change. The renewed course structure for the semester system is yet to receive DU’s approval.

Bhaskaracharya College also provides two short-term certificate courses in “Medical Nutrition Therapy” and “Food Safety” for the students of this department. Other related certificate courses are available in institutes such as IGNOU,which can be taken up along with this course.
