Maoists kill another CPM leader

The Maoists gunned down a local CPM leader in Purulia district on Saturday afternoon.

The shootout took place at 7 pm when local committee secretary Lakshmikanta Kumar was returning home. According to the police sources,about six armed cadres riding in two motorcycles intercepted Lakshmikanta and shot at him from close range. The CPM leader died on the spot,while the assailants escaped.

The police said that a maoists sheltered in Ajyodhya hills might be responsible.

This is the fourth case where a CPM leader has been gunned down in West Midnapore and Purulia district in the last 48 hours. About three companies of central security forces are posted in Purulia in addition to the state forces.

The police did not rule out these being revenge killings in retaliation to the arrests of two key maoist members from a village in Jhalda in Purulia district early this week.
