A day after the Centre branded the CPI(Maoist) a terrorist organisation,the Maoists struck at three places in Bihar and launched attacks in Jharkhand and West Bengal on the second day of their bandh in five states to protest against the Lalgarh action.

The Maoists attacked a police escort at Lakhisarai court in Bihar on Tuesday noon and freed their two colleagues,including area commander Babulal Besra. Two policemen and as many civilians were injured in the incident. A policeman has been referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Though deputy development commissioner Rajiv Ranjan suffered a splinter injury,he is out of danger, said ADGP Neelmani.

Around 11.15 on Monday night,the Maoists blew up a mobile tower at a Barachatti village under Gaya. They also exploded an arts and culture building at Madanpur in Aurangabad on Monday night. No casualty was reported.

A group of Maoists blasted the vacant panchayat bhavan at Chahapur in Palamau district around 3 am,SP Mohit Bundus said in Medininagar in Jharkhand.

No traffic plied on highways across Jharkhand,with the truckers suspending their services for the second consecutive day. Losses in the mining sector had crossed Rs 100 crore approximately following the two-day bandh,the president of Federation of Jharkhand Chambers,Commerce and Industry,Anchal Kinger said.

The Maoists also made an abortive bid to disrupt the supply line of the security forces involved in the Lalgarh operation by detonating a landmine at Chara village between Midnapore and Kirakata in West Bengal.

Life was hit in Maoist-affected areas of Lalgarh,Binpur,Pirakata and Jhargram in West Midnapore district and also in Bankura and Purulia areas. Patrolling was intensified after a landmine was detected at Birandi station.

Normal life was also disrupted in pockets of Maoist-hit southern and western districts of Orissa. (With PTI)
