The joint forces engaged armed Maoist cadres in Narcha village in the Lalgarh police station area on Saturday. The incident took place around 6 pm, when the Maoists exploded two landmines while the security forces were patrolling the area. The gunfire continued for an hour but no casualty was reported.

CPM, Trinamool supporters clash
CPM and Trinamool supporters clashed over harvesting of paddy in Goaltore on Saturday. Ten persons were injured. Aditya Manna, a CPM supporter, was harvesting paddy in his field when he had an altercation with some TMC supporters.

Strike at Visva-Bharati
The non-teaching staff of the Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan on Saturday called for an indefinite strike after a meeting with the university authorities failed to reach a consensus. Earlier, the elected employee committee had blamed the management for alleged misappropriation of funds, irregular appointments and corruption. The committee had demanded a CBI probe into the corruption charges. Today, university authorities said they would ask the Centre to appoint a higher inquiry body. The workers alleged it was a mere eyewash by the management and decided to go on strike.
