August 2: The passenger car sales increased by 16 per cent to 35,528 units in July 1999 as compared to 30,603 units in the same month last year due to record sales achieved by Zen, 800 cc and Omni models, chief general manager (marketing & sales), Rohtash Mal said.

The Zen model sales was also a record during the review month as the company posted a 16.2 per cent growth in sales to 7907 units from 6800 units in the same month last year despite the most intense competition in the segment, Mal said.

Sales of the base model and most popular car of the company, Maruti-800, grew by 10 per cent to 18,400 in July this year from 16,700 units sold in July 1998, the highest ever recorded by the company.

The mid-size car model Esteem also continued its leadership position by selling 1596 units in July this year, accounting for about 40 per cent of the total segment and double the sales of its nearest competitor, Mal said.

Bajaj Auto sales fall in July

MUMBAI: Sales of India’s leading two and three-wheel vehicle maker Bajaj Auto Ltd fell in July, the company said on Monday. Sales fell 14 per cent to 101,000 units in July from 117,000 in the same month a year ago, data released on its website bajajauto.com showed. The company is India’s largest scooter maker. It also makes motorcycles and three-wheel vehicles.
