The match-fixing scandal is set to haunt former Indian skipper and Congress candidate from Moradabad, Md Azharrudin.

The match-fixing scandal is set to haunt former skipper and Congress candidate from Moradabad Mohammed Azharrudin with opposition parties planning to rake up the issue in the run up to the polls.

"Congress has brought him here to exploit his image as a cricketer but he is the man who brought India shame with his involvement in the match-fixing scandals. We will remind people about his wrong deeds in our election campaign," BJP's candidate from Moradabad Sarvesh Singh alleged.

Samajwadi Party leaders in the city also have similar views in this regard.

"His poll managers are banking on the Muslim votes but they will not vote for somebody who was involved in a betting scandal and SP will highlight his involvement among the voters of the constituency," SP leader and Moradabad's mayor S T Hassan said.

Soon after Azhar's candidature was announced by the Congress, the local BJP and Shiv Sena cadres held demonstrations in the city against the nomination of a "tainted" man as a candidate in Moradabad, the BJP candidate said.

On his part, Azhar has said that the match-fixing scandal would not affect his political fortunes in the constituency.

The match-fixing scandal hit the headlines in April 2000. The Central Bureau of Investigation, after a six-month probe, named five cricketers, including Azhar, as being involved in throwing matches. The BCCI then banned Azhar along with test cricketer Ajay Sharma for life after their retirement from international arena.

Two other players Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar along with team's then Physio Ali Irani were served a five year ban by the BCCI.

azharBy: vinay | 08-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward BJP has the habit of giving its own verdict on a particular community..when BCCI has cleared Azhar after a trial of six years this is vague to raise this issue now. One shall be countered politically not by character assassination. Azhar need not worry...show your late cut in politics as well.

Match-fixing scandal set to haunt AzharBy: Hunt | 07-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward I think Azharuddin should be given an opporunity to contest, and his past match fixing scandal is nothing when compared all the other scandals done by the so called netas, what did sanjay dutt do when he was arrested and imprisoned for the bombay serial blast and SP is party made him as its general secretary, BJP is saying anti muslim statements and also did the demolish the muslim worship places and they say that will built ram temple there and they people who talk nonsense, when compared to the people who do politics and also loot and hurt the country for there personal satisfaction, and if they can have chance to contest in election, why not Azharuddin, he was one of the good cricketer India had, how is also proved not guilty by the law of this land and why should he be cornered in the name of match fixing? Can some one explain, he is not the only one who brought the nation to the shame in the International arena, there are lot of them we have big list so let him be free,,,,,,,
