Army Chief Deepak Kapoor finds himself in a mess, and without uttering a word. His inability to establish a working relationship with Northern Army Commander Lt Gen H S Panag has now spilled out into an ugly conflict. What is less known is that Lt Gen Daljit Singh, who retired in October as Western Army Commander, didn’t even get the customary dining out. Many couldn’t help wondering if this was because Daljit, along with another course-mate Aditya Singh, was a challenger to the Army Chief’s post. While Kapoor’s predecessors have had their share of problems, most Army chiefs in the past have managed to rise above all this and smoothen the cracks through leadership. Far from it, a new story doing the rounds in defence circles is that a contingent of Military Police was dispatched to the temporary residences of both Daljit and Aditya Singh in Delhi Cantt recently to enquire whether the Generals were “misusing” Army facilities.
