The Congress has decided to launch an agitation across Uttar Pradesh demanding action on the Comptroller and Auditor Generals (CAG) report tabled in the UP Assembly recently. The party has decided to especially focus on misappropriation of funds meant for the construction of two memorials in Lucknow,as pointed out in the report.
The decision was taken at a meeting of newly elected district and city Congress presidents, presided over by three senior leaders Congress state president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, chairman of the National Scheduled Caste Commission P L Punia and Congress MP Jagdambika Pal.
The shape of the agitation would be decided soon, but we have decided to take up the issue because we have been alleging gross misappropriation of funds on these memorials as well as large-scale wastage of funds on demolishing and reconstructing these structures. All these things have now come out in the CAG report and we have decided to launch an agitation across the state demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mayawati, said UPCC spokesperson Subodh Srivastava.
Srivastava pointed out that while Rs 66 crore extra expenditure on memorials has been revealed in the report, they would study it closely and take up each issue related to fund mismanagement one by one.
In the meeting,it was also decided that the district units would now file RTI applications, seeking information on Central government schemes such as MGNREGA,welfare schemes for Dalits, minority welfare schemes, etc.
Sources said that to speed up work of identifying misappropriation of Central funds in UP,a meeting of the UPAs flagship programme monitoring committee has been called in Delhi on August 16.
