  • Four days after the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee decided to celebrate AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s June 19 birthday as “Social Harmony and Equality Day”, Chief Minister Mayawati has asked her party leaders to organise public meetings at all district headquarters on the same day.

At a joint meeting here, the CM asked her party MLAs, MPs and district leaders to make people aware of the Opposition conspiracy to prevent her from becoming the Prime Minister. This is her second meeting with party functionaries after the Lok Sabha results.

BSP MLAs said the party chief has asked them to ensure a gathering of more than one lakh at each district meeting. At the meeting, the CM distributed a leaflet saying the Congress and the BJP contested the elections with a “jativadi mansikta (casteist mindset)” to prevent her from becoming the PM. Citing the political situation at the time of debate over the nuclear deal, the leaflet said the BJP and the Congress had joined hands to stop the BSP from forming an alternative government at the Centre.

Calling the UPCC’s programme of having meal with the Dalits on Rahul’s birthday as sheer “natakbazi (histrionics)”, the leaflet said those who adopted an attitude of neglect and humiliation towards Dalit leaders are now showing concern for them to get votes. AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, also in-charge of the UPCC, said the Congress would continue with its scheduled programme on June 19.
