Maya plays Muslim card, raises pitch on quota

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today supported the Centre’s move to create a quota within quota for OBC Muslims but added that the total reservation for OBCs should be increased proportionately.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today supported the Centre’s move to create a quota within quota for OBC Muslims but added that the total reservation for OBCs should be increased proportionately.

Similarly, the demand for inclusion of certain OBCs in Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes could be accepted by increasing the quota for SCs and STs,she said. However, she did not spell out what should be the new quotas, only saying that Muslims,OBCs,SCs and STs should get quotas in proportion to their population.

Addressing a rally of Muslim,Vaishya and Kshatriya communities here,Mayawati said the BSP would support a constitutional amendment in this regard. She added that a national policy for providing reservation should be formulated so that the same system is in place in the entire country.

Focussing on the Muslim vote bank,Mayawati alleged that the Congress had always betrayed the community, adding that the country witnessed maximum communal riots under its rule. “The BSP has given maximum number of tickets to Muslims in Lok Sabha and Assembly polls,”she claimed, adding that other parties deliberately ignored the community.

Mayawati also attacked Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for his statement that an elephant (BSP’s poll symbol) was eating all the funds sent by the Centre. She said the Congress has “lost its mental balance” due to which it sees “elephant” eating money.
