Having forced the government to introduce a Bill to amend the Constitution to provide for reservation to SC and STs in promotion in government jobs,BSP chief Mayawati on Wednesday slammed the Congress and the opposition BJP alike for their political interests in delaying the Bill.
It is because of their political interests that the government did not bring the legislation in May as it did not want to antagonise any political party ahead of Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections. For Congress and its allies, the welfare of SC or STs is secondary, Mayawati said after the Bill could not be taken up for discussion due to the BJPs continued protest against coal block allocations.
She also criticised the BJP for not acceding to her request to withhold their protest for a few hours to facilitate passage of the Bill. She had met Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley Tuesday with the request.
BJP and its allies also have their own political interests. They have also kept the issue of reservation for SC or STs in promotions as the second priority. They are dreaming of forming the government in 2014 by cornering the government on the issue of coal block allocations. BJP and its allies are anti-Dalit, she said.
Mayawati warned both the Congress and BJP of adverse political fallout. Both parties delayed the Bill and they will pay for it in the next elections and SC or ST people will not tolerate this, she said.
The BSP chief sought to play down the SP members protest against the Bill, saying Mulayam Singh Yadavs party would not have mattered had the Congress and the BJP agreed to pass the Bill.
