Maya writes to PM seeking special scheme for Bundelkhand farmers

Chief Minister Mayawati has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding a special loan waiver scheme for the farmers of Bundelkhand.

Chief Minister Mayawati has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding a special loan waiver scheme for the farmers of Bundelkhand.

Under the special scheme, the loans which were distributed among Bundelkhand farmers till March 31,2011,should also be included, the CM further said.

Mayawati said that the Bundelkhand region has a difficult topography and its economy completely depends on agriculture. She added that farmers’ lives are full of difficulties in this particular region. Blaming previous governments for their failure to ensure all round development of Bundelkhand, she said this region is economically backward.

In her letter, the chief minister said her government has taken several steps to improve the economic condition of the region. She mentioned that her government had issued clear directions against any repressive action for loan recovery from those who have taken upto Rs 2 lakh. With its limited resources, the state government has provided facilities like crop loans and agriculture investment to Bundelkhand farmers in the past, she claimed. Despite a growth of 16.5 per cent in the agriculture production in this region in the last financial year, the farmers’ condition is far from satisfactory, she added.

Referring to the Centre’s debt relief scheme of the year 2008,she said it was not enough for the Bundelkhand farmers. According to her,the loans which were given to farmers before March 31,1997 were not included in this scheme.
