UP Chief Minister Mayawati ordered a magisterial inquiry into protests against power shortage in Rahul Gandhi's constituency Amethi.

UP Chief Minister Mayawati ordered a magisterial inquiry into protests against power shortage in Rahul Gandhi’s constituency Amethi,accusing Congress workers of trying to take the law in their own hands.

The Chief Minister ordered the transfer of Superintendent of Police of Sultanpur district while a Station House Officer was shifted to police lines for failing to handle the situation. The Provincial Armed Constabulary unit deployed in Amethi has also been removed.

“Any person,whether he is associated with a political party or is a Government employee,will not be allowed to take law and order into his hands,such elements will be dealt with strictly,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.

Rejecting the charge that her Government was discriminating against the district- a stronghold of Nehru-Gandhi family,Mayawati said she will not hesitate in taking action against those disturbing law and order situation in the state. She blamed Congress’ rule for the power woes of the state.

Agitated protesters who were demanding proper power supply had pelted stones at police stations on July 13 injuring policemen after which police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

FIR was registered against 235 protesters including 200 unidentified persons.

The incident drew a sharp reaction from Congress which demanded a judicial inquiry into alleged police atrocities.

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi will visit Amethi on Friday and meet people injured in police lathicharge.
