  • The civic body had issued a showcause notice to the plant’s management in April; several extensions given since then, but to no avail

The House of the Municipal Corporation, in a meeting held today, authorised the Municipal Commissioner to take action on the showcause notice issued to the management of the garbage processing plant at Dadumajra. The councillors said the commissioner should take appropriate action if the plant is not functioning properly.

The civic body had issued a showcause notice to the plant’s management in April, and since then extensions are being given during every hearing but the plant authorities have not responded.

After anomalies in the plant’s functioning came to light earlier this year, the House had constituted a committee led by councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma to probe the matter. The committee conducted an inquiry, whose report was submitted in the House a few months ago. But no discussion on the report has been held so far. Sharma said, “When the committee was conducting the inquiry, the executive jumped in and issued a showcause notice. This should not have been done. The Commissioner should be asked to take a decision on the notice. Why is he delaying it?”

“Even months after the report was submitted, no councillor or official has raised any objection to its findings,” he added.

Two special meetings have been called over the last few months to discuss the report, but the discussion could not take place.

Councillor Manjit Chohan said the plant was inaugurated before it was completed that led to many problems. A penalty should be imposed on the plant if it is not functioning properly, he said.

    ... contd.
