The UT Administration has given its approval for Municipal Corporation councillors to conduct a study tour in Gujarat. A communication to this effect was received on Monday.

The clearance assumes significance as the proposals for study tours that were sent earlier had been rejected. In the last tour,19 councillors had gone to Singapore,Malaysia and Bangkok while permission was denied to the remaining councillors as it was felt that the tour “did not yield much result”.

The date and schedule for the tour is yet to be finalised. Mayor Kamlesh said,“The previous proposed tours to different places had been rejected. However,we have finally received clearance and the details will be finalised soon. The tour will facilitate us in understanding how the system in other places functions and we can adopt a few projects that we feel are suitable for the city.”

The MC has also kept a provision for such tours in the annual budget. A number of teams of councillors from various parts of the country regularly visit the city in order to study projects functioning under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, the sewerage as well as the waste disposal system.

Reacting to the letter sent by Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria yesterday, the Mayor said according to Rule 38 (6) of the Municipal Act,the Mayor can ask for any information pertaining to the works of the civic body. “The information I have demanded is according to the rules. An update on the status of the projects should be made available,” she said.
