MC files 25 complaints with CJM for violating sanitation norms

The Municipal Corporation on Tuesday filed complaints against 25 offenders for violating sanitation bylaws. The complaints were filed with the Chief Judicial Magistrate.

Earlier also, complaints against 25 offenders had been filed and notices were issued to them for appearing in court.

Last month, a decision was taken by the civic body that if the defaulters did not pay the fine within one week, a complaint would be sent to the CJM. The maximum punishment that can be awarded is imprisonment upto six months. For this year, sanitation is high on the agenda of the civic body.

The MC issues around 300 to 400 challans per month. However, with no stringent measures being taken, people were defaulting in paying challans. The maximum amount that the MC can impose on the violators is Rs 500.

Additional Commissioner Sunil Bhatia said, "The offenders are caught red-handed by our teams when they are throwing garbage at unauthorised places. The aim of sending the challans to court is that it is a deterrent for the residents. When traffic police issues challans, they take away the person's RC or driving licence. The enforcement wing takes away items lying at a place. There was no deterrent when challans for violating sanitation bylaws were issued. That is why a decision was taken to send the challans to court."

Municipal Corporation officials say that it is the responsibility of the residents to ensure that their garbage is thrown in the garbage bins. Throwing garbage outside the bins is an offence. Putting construction waste and horticulture waste in the bins is also an offence. Government offices and institutions have also been issued a warning not to dump waste outside their boundary walls.

The MC has constituted teams that are on the lookout for defaulters and would cover the city in phases. Over the past few years, the condition of sanitation in the city has been deteriorating with garbage and construction waste lying at various places. The schemes of the MC to tackle the problem were hitting roadblocks. However, for this year, it was decided that there would be a special focus on sanitation.
