MC moots proposal to privatise maintenance of UT’s road berms

The maintenance of the road berms in the city is likely to be given into private hands. The Municipal Corporation has mooted a proposal for this. The issue will be discussed in a meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee of the civic body.

The V-3 roads in the city came under the purview of the Municipal Corporation almost two years ago. With this the maintenance of the berms was also transferred to the MC. The road berms have green patches along the stretches. It has been proposed that these could be maintained by private companies or individuals.

This will mean that the companies will be given permission to put up advertisements on the berms. Since Advertisement Control is under the UT Administration, the civic body will have to seek permission for it. The details of the proposal will be worked out by the F&CC. The civic body is also looking at allowing the maintenance of greenbelts to be given into private hands. The proposal for maintenance of road berms is on similar lines as the roundabouts where boards of a specific dimension are put up by companies and maintenance is carried out.

If given a nod, the proposal will be out into practice on the road berms in Sector 18. The road leading from the roundabout near the bus stand in Sector 22 to Sector 18 will be beautified. For the civic body, it will reduce the burden of maintaining the road berms.

The Municipal Corporation had earlier mooted a proposal for the beautification of sector entrances by giving these into private hands. It had been proposed that the four entry/ exit points to the sector would be beautified with a variety of structures being created. The proposal never saw the light of day. It is after a discussion among the members of the committee that a final decision on the proposal will be taken.
