After the Night Food Street near PGI became popular among residents, the Municipal Corporation is planning to set up two new food streets in the city.
But as frequent incidents of brawls are reported from the Night Food Street, the new food streets would be open till 10 pm — the UT Administration had also said no to any new night food street.
The civic body is in the process of preparing estimates of these food streets, which will come up in Sector 48 and Industrial Area, Phase I. The estimates are likely to be placed before the Finance and Contract Committee of the MC next month.
The new food streets will be modified versions of the Night Food Street.
“Care will be taken to provide enough space for parking. And a new look will be given to these food streets. A better seating arrangement than the Night Food Street will be in place,” Mayor Kamlesh said. “The estimate for one food street is almost ready. We have asked the officials to bring up the issue for discussion in the next F&CC meeting.”
Residents of the southern sectors, meanwhile, have a reason to rejoice, as no such facility was available in the area. Same is the case with the Industrial Area, where a large number of people come for work.
Councillor Jatinder Bhatia said: “The food street in Sector 48 will be a boon for residents of southern sectors. No such facility is available in this area. In fact, Mohali residents will also find it convenient to come here.”
