MC reluctant to deploy its sanitation workers at fairs, to tell admn to hire private body

The Municipal Corporation has expressed its apprehension at providing sanitation workers to the UT Administration during fairs. The Sanitation Committee of the civic body will soon write to the Administration suggesting that private agencies be hired during big cultural events like Crafts Mela at Kalagram and Chandigarh Carnival at Leisure Valley, among other events.

The committee met under the chairmanship of H C Kalyan on Friday. For the Crafts Mela, around 250 sanitation workers were deputed at Kalagram. The committee members rued that every time such an event was organised in the city, sanitation in different sectors of the city was affected, as the work force was diverted.

It was decided that the Municipal Corporation should write to the Administration to hire private agencies for sanitation during such events. The members said that every time there was such an event, the MC was asked to send a large number of sanitation workers from the sectors to the venue of the event.

The committee extended the present contract of hiring 20 tractor trolleys to March 31. The officers concerned were asked to complete the process of tender for further allotment of the work. The issue had been discussed at the meeting of the general house held in November.

With the councillors expressing apprehension at the cost being quoted, the issue was referred to the sanitation committee where it was approved.

The members also decided that identity cards signed by contractors and area councillor will be issued to all the safaikarmcharis to keep a tab on the number of safaikarmacharies.

There have been constant complaints from councillors regarding the number of sanitation workers being less than what was being claimed.
