MC to approach CJM if you don’t pay challans for throwing garbage

The city residents now need to be extra vigilant and not throw garbage at unauthorised places. Getting strict against those who do not pay challans for violating Public Health and Sanitation Byelaws, the Municipal Corporation has decided to file a complaint with the Chief Judicial Magistrate. It is for the first time that the civic body has initiated such a step.

Notices will be issued by the court in due time, and the defaulters will now have to go to the court to pay their challans if they do not pay it to the MC within a week's time.

The MC has appointed an advocate for this purpose and 129 challans have been forwarded to him. The advocate will file these with the CJM. Earlier, not much was done if the challans issued were not taken cognisance of. A challan of maximum Rs 500 is issued for violating these bylaws.

"The step is being taken for the first time by the civic body. Initially, 129 complaints would be forwarded to the chief judicial magistrate. This would be a regular practice from now onwards. The city residents would be required to pay the challans in a week, failing which they would have to go to court," says Additional Commissioner Sunil Bhatia.

Heaps of garbage can be seen lying around in all sectors. The residents as well as vendors throw garbage at unauthorised places. The Municipal Corporation has started special drives during night to check the violators. Better sanitation in the city has been set as one of the priorities of the MC for this year.

A special drive was started from Sector 22 a few days back and would be conducted in other sectors in the coming days. During the drive on Wednesday night, 26 challans were issued to the defaulters for throwing garbage at unauthorised places. Awareness is also being created among residents to keep their surroundings and the city clean.
