Having received criticism from various quarters about the use of paver blocks around the roots of trees, the Municipal Corporation (MC) is all set to get a survey conducted of the trees that have been affected. Thereafter, paver blocks will be removed from the roots of the trees.
The survey would be done of the trees on the roads within the purview of the civic body. The matter would come up for discussion at the meeting of the Environment and City Beautification Committee and a final decision taken.
Environmentalists and city residents have opposed the manner in which paver blocks are being installed around trees. Instead of leaving some gap, these have been installed right up to the roots of the trees.
Councillor Pardeep Chhabra, chairman of the Environment and City Beautification Committee, pointed out that the citys green cover needs to be protected and that paver blocks cannot be allowed to damage the trees.
The civic body approves agenda items worth crores of rupees for installation of paver blocks at almost every meeting, whether of the General House or the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC).
These are being installed on all pavements and open spaces,as well as around parks. Officials of the civic body had recently brought an agenda to the House on the formulation of a paver block installation policy and termed the installation of paver blocks an environmental hazard.
The councillors had, however, referred the matter to the roads committee, stating that since half the city already had paver blocks, the other wards should not be denied these.
