The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will soon employ mechanical sweepers for Delhi roads,a job that is being done manually at present.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will soon employ mechanical sweepers for Delhi roads,a job that is being done manually at present. All roads measuring 60 feet and above will be cleaned using such sweepers. The civic body will thus be cleaning up more than 900 km of roads under its jurisdiction using the new technology.
For the job,the 12 zones of the MCD have been divided into two equal parts based on the width of the roads. For roads that are wider than 100 feet,South,Najafgarh,Karol Bagh,West,Rohini and Narela Zone form Group 1.
The six zones have 132.81 km of roads that are wider than 100 feet, for which five mechanical sweepers will be deployed.
Central,City,Sadar Paharganj,Shahdara (South),Shahdara (North) and Civil Lines zones form Group 2. They have a total of 113.40 km of roads that are more than 100 feet in width. These roads will get four mechanical sweepers.
For roads that are between 60 and 100 feet in width,South,Central,West,City,Sadar Paharganj and Rohini form Group 1 that comprise 324.92 km of roads. Group 2 comprises Najafgarh,Shahdara (South),Shahdara (North),Narela,Karol Bagh and Civil Lines zone, and have 329.62 km. While 10 mechanical sweepers will be employed for Group 1,nine mechanical sweepers will be employed for Group 2.
The contract of all four categories have been given separately to contractors for a period of seven years. The companies will charge between Rs 907 and Rs 1,124 for each kilometre of road cleaned. The plan to use mechanical sweepers was first floated by the MCD in 2008 in order to get roads cleaned more effectively and faster. While the civic body was looking for its implementation by the Commonwealth Games, the project was delayed.
Small streets in residential colonies will be swept manually.
