Civic body has launched a host of projects to ensure paperless transparency and image overhaul
When it comes to digitalisation of government bodies, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has been in top gear for some time. No more dusty files languishing in departments or lax staff battling yawns after a warm lunch, the Corporation wants to change its image, and it’s doing so by lining up a host of projects for a paperless and transparent MCD.
From ensuring that the employees come on time and (importantly) leave when it’s time to nudging them to feel the unfamiliar computer on the table, the MCD is going for a complete overhaul.
“We have a staff from 25 years to 50 years of age. Many among them are technologically challenged and are too reluctant to learn. But we have been ensuring that they are trained and get used to computers. Then we can create a transparent and accountable system,” a senior MCD official says.
Indeed, the employees need to be tech savvy, for otherwise, it will be difficult to operate amid the various e-projects recently launched by the MCD. Newsline lists them:
EDIS (Engineering Department Information System)
Started: December 2008
Cost: Rs 17 lakh
EDIS will keep a check on unauthorised construction in the city. Under the project, junior engineers who are always in the field are issued BlackBerries. They register complaints and submit a report on the action taken online. The system monitors the speed of the action taken, which helps in fixing accountability if an officer causes delay.
