MCD parking plans remain on paper

More than one and a half years ago,the Municipal Corporation of Delhi laid the foundation stone for the Kamla Nagar multi-level parking. However,since then no work has been done at the site. The file of the parking plan has been doing rounds of various departments since one year. So far,even the tender has not yet been awarded.

The Kamla Nagar parking,with others in the city,was planned keeping the Commonwealth Games in mind. But except laying foundation stones and drawing plans,little has been done to meet the deadline. Foundation stones for parkings at E block market at Hauz Khas,Munirka Market,Model Town and Gandhi Nagar Market were laid just a few days before the election code of conduct came into force. The four projects are expected to cost Rs 120 crore.

The corporation was to create parking spaces in residential areas and on roads notified under the mixed land use. However,in the last two years the MCD has not constructed any new parking.

Paucity of funds cannot be a reason. In the last three years,the MCD collected more than Rs 534 crore as conversion,parking and registration charges from the people.

Leader of the Opposition Jai Kishan Sharma said: Were just collecting money from the people. Our output is nil. People have a lot of expectations from the MCD,but we are a complete failure, he said.

On the BJP-ruled civic agencys working,Sharma said the deadlines cannot be met. In the past one and a half year,we havent done any work at the Kamla Nagar parking site,how can we complete all these parkings by the 2010 Games? Mayor Arti Mehra said: The Kamla Nagar parking was going to be fully automatic and the MCD needed permission to dig up to eight floors,so it took time. But in case of others,it is not the same. We will be able to complete the work on time.
