
With the livestock market and abattoir finally moving to Ghazipur, along with the protesting Qureshi commission agents and meat traders associations, Newsline takes a look at the numbers that caused the fortnight-long stir in Delhi.
* About300 trucksof livestock come to Delhi every day from Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
* The daily meat consumption in Delhi, according to MCD, is more than10,000 animals.Meat traders allege the Ghazipur abattoir can slaughter only 5,000 animals.
* Livestock buyers, who earlier paid Rs 5 to MCD andRs 10to butchers for slaughtering sheep and goat at Idgah, will now have to payRs 45.The rate earlier for slaughtering buffalo was Rs 75, which now will be Rs 325. These rates had not been revised by the MCD since 2004 when the price of meat was only Rs 140 per kg.
* The price of mutton, which before the strike was Rs 200 per kg and reached Rs 260 per kg during the strike, will now stand atRs 220 per kg.
* The Ghazipur abattoir stands next to a90-foot high, 45-lakh tonnelandfill site, one of the main issues regarding hygiene in the area.
* The meat associations allege that the livestock market in Ghazipur has only96 roomsfor sheltering animals brought in by more than450commission agents.
* Commission agents, who broker the livestock, had been paying a nominal sum of Rs 500 as fees to the MCD till now, for themselves and their helpers. They will now be paying Rs 10,000for each person to be allotted a space of 12 sq yards, to Allanasons.
